A favorite quote...

From Olive Kittredge by Elizabeth Strout:

"...it was because she had not known what one should know: that day after day was unconsciously squandered."

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog! I will try to be reflective, entertaining, ironic, or useful as I negotiate my life at this crossroads!

Last summer I was trying to write a poem a day, usually something simple and often silly, and often a haiku at the suggestion of a book I was reading called Life is a Verb. (I think that phrase would make a great bumper sticker or tshirt!) I just unearthed one of the journals from that time, and so should bravely "publish" one of the poems. Of course, this compulsion could be in a similar vein as those who insist on doing extended karaoke at crowded bars...but here goes...

Poem #23 (as if I'm Emily Dickinson or something!)

Still turkey tableau
Flock the car and admire self
Peck, too, reflection.

From August, near the end of the experiment, I'm afraid:

Some days are not poetic.
Nor do they fit into a syllabic pattern.
Some days are like fog.
Some days are blue skies.
Some days life and love seems to swell up in my soul
And other days...not!

Why?

So, why have I started this? I am at a turning point in my life. Barbie and I have both turned fifty, I am about to send my twin boys off to college, and we will be alone again like a newly married couple! Add to that some significant hormonal changes, and I think it is fair to say that I am, or will be a new woman!

What will life be like? That is the question of the hour! I'd like to think that I will blossom into a new, cooler, beautiful being full of self confidence and wisdom. Or, well of course the alternatives are not as happy!

Let's consider this the first page in the book I keep talking about and that Paula keeps contributing to. It's not quite yet my latest book idea: Entertaining in the College Years: Tuna Casserole Dinner Parties. Nor is it Selling the Dog and other ways of Financing College.
The first blog. Starting a blog in the spring, blogging about the changes and new directions of my path...more to follow.
